The topicofpositive deviance is analyzed in relation to howvarious theorists have conceptuallzedthis particular type ofdevlance. In addition, the divergent examples of positive deviance/deviants that have been cited in the literature are reviewed. Finally, atypology is developed that is based on those previously cited examples. The typology includes the following kinds of positive deviance: altruism, charisma, innovation, supra-conforming behavior, and innate characteristics. Anotherpotential type--ex-deviants-is also suggested.
